Xiaomi has been recently introduced another phone called the Mi5 to their customers at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It is one of the best values premium phones that is compact and worth to take a look in the market. The device would be sold in three storage variants which are 32GB, 64GB and 128GB with the latters have been modified by the company to have more high quality configuration. Nevertheless, both versions of the phones would be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragron 820 Kyro chipset clocking at 1.36GHz, 1.59GHz, or 2.15GHz respectively along with Adreno 530 GPU and included a 3000mAh battery.
The 32GB device comes with Snapdragon 820 Kyro that could power up the device between 1.36GHz to 1.8GHz based on efficiency and performance clusters. It also supports LPDDR4 RAM up to 1333MHz. On the high quality model, customers could get either the 1.59GHz or 2.15GHz speed bins that offers RAM up to 1866MHz. Xiaomi continues its production of 5.15” 1080p IPS LCD screen display to achieved a better battery life from the DDIC and display controller power. This alone provides their customers with a high pixel density screen of 428ppi. In addition, Xiaomi improve the device’s power efficiency with 16 backlight LEDs which is more than others devices’ conventional designs. The addition of 16 backlight LEDs effect the brightness of the device up to 600nits and increased 17% of its backlight efficiency.
Design for the Mi5 has been adopted directly from the Mi Note’s tapered back sides in order to give their customers an excellent grip of the devices together with curvy metal frame. However, the lack of 2.5D glass on the device makes its front edges quite sharp. The Mi5 provides two options of material for its back sides including a traditional glass and a premium ceramic. Customers should take note on the ceramic material as it is more scratch resistant due to its hardness and it is easier to lift. On the other hand, the phones’ internals also have a switch to UFS-based NAND storage that could goes up to 450MB/s of data rates.
There a power button and a volume rocker can be found at the right side of the device while SIM card slot tray on the upper left side of the device. Several others hardware such as microphone hole, IR blaster, 4 speaker holes, USB-C connector, 3.5mm headphone jack and 4 speaker holes can also be found around the device. The Mi5 from Xiaomi would be their first phone with a physical home button as it has a high accuracy of fingerprint sensor. Customers would also be impressed with the implementation of the new device wakeup feature.
The Mi5 has a good noise reduction and better colour reproduction through 16MP Sony’s IMX298 sensor that provides phase-detection autofocus for deep-trench isolation and fast focusing. The camera also has 6-lens optical system with a 35mm focal length and an aperture of F/2.0. It is also the first camera in a phone with 4-axis optical image stabilization system that produces transversal image on top of longitudinal and latitudinal environment. The Mi5’s camera also provides 4MP front-facing camera with F/2.0 aperture.
All the Mi5 variants support connectivity for LTE Advanced or 4G+ as well as VoLTE. It also has the function to support two nano SIM cards. In term of others connectivity, the Mi5 is able to support GPS with AGPS, NFC, Wi-fi 802.11ac, and Bluetooth 4.2. This phone use MIUI 7 operating system (OS) on top of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
